What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the most prevalent cannabinoids that have been identified to naturally occur in the cannabis plant. This cannabinoid can account for up to 40% of a plant’s extract. Studies have shown that CBD has no euphoric effect, but may potentially have more therapeutic effects than THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system, but it has a stronger affinity for CB2 receptors. CBD also slows the degradation of the body’s natural endocannabinoids, holding these signals in place, and creating longer-lasting therapeutic effects. Research has shown that CBD can be used for the management of many ailments including anxiety, stress, and inflammation.
How Does CBD Affect Pets?
Dogs and cats have an endocannabinoid system just like humans. It has CB1 and CB2 receptors and sends natural cannabinoids to other areas of the body to maintain homeostasis. CBD interacts with pet endocannabinoid systems exactly like the ones in humans. It binds with both receptors but has a stronger affinity for the CB2 receptors. This has been shown to have similar effects on pets as on their owners. Anecdotal evidence suggests that dogs and cats have had anxiety, pain, and inflammation all reduced due to regular CBD consumption.
It is important to note that CBD inhibits cytochrome P450, which is a chemical in the body that metabolizes most drugs. CBD could render drugs ineffective if they require a metabolized product for efficacy. Be sure to consult a veterinarian before putting a pet on a CBD regimen if they are taking any other medications.

CBD has been studied extensively on lab animals and humans. There are even one or two studies that have been conducted on dogs. Below are a few of the issues CBD has helped some dogs with.
Arthritis: One study found that dogs given 4.4 milligrams per pound twice daily showed significant improvement in pain relief.
Itchiness: The company ElleVet found that dogs who used their CBD and CBDA topical had drastically reduced itching as reported by their owners.
Anxiety: Mountains of anecdotal evidence support the claim that CBD helps reduce anxiety in dogs. It is one of the reasons so many pet owners give it to their dogs. However, only one study has been done that shows a correlation between CBD and reducing anxiety. The results were not significant enough to determine if the CBD worked.
Better Cat Health with CBD
To date, there are no studies that test the efficacy of CBD on cats for any specific therapeutic benefit. Several have been conducted on the absorption rates of CBD by cats, but nothing conclusive has been published on any therapeutic effects. Due to the nature of CBD and its effects on dogs, many veterinarians believe that CBD could help cats with epilepsy, pain, inflammation, chronic vomiting, and anxiety.
Do Not Give Delta Products or THC Products to Pets
Delta 8, Delta 9, Delta 10, THCa, THCB, and all other intoxicating cannabinoids might get humans to relax, but they are overwhelming and frightening for pets. Dogs and cats are reported to have more cannabinoid receptors compared with humans. This suggests that pets are more susceptible to the toxic effects of Delta and THC products. This can induce panic in pets that can result in mild discomfort or something more severe like hospitalization. According to one study, cats exhibited strong psychomotor agitation that turned into aggression. If Cannabis is going to be administered to a pet for anxiety or pain, be sure to use CBD and not THC or Delta products.
