THCa is the cannabinoid that does nothing until you add heat. Then it does quite a lot. What is THCa?

THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a cannabinoid found in the living cannabis plant. In its raw form it doesn't bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors in your endocannabinoid system, so on its own it produces no psychoactive effects. Once you heat it and it decarboxylates, it becomes Delta 9 THC and behaves exactly like it.

What's the difference between THCa and THC?

One carboxyl group. That's it. THCa carries an extra carboxyl group that THC doesn't, and that tiny difference is what keeps raw THCa from producing euphoria. Smoking, vaping, or dabbing strips that group away and converts THCa into Delta 9 THC. It still amazes us that one small structural change can lead to such a different experience.

Is THCa legal?

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, cannabis containing less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight is considered federally legal hemp, and THCa products are sold on that basis. Some states have recently restricted or banned THCa, though, so check your local and state regulations before you order.

How long does THCa stay in your system?

It depends on how often you use it, how you consume it, and your own physiology. Because THCa converts to THC when heated, it shows up on tests the same way other cannabis products do: a day or two in blood or saliva, up to a month in urine for frequent users, and as long as 90 days in hair.
