What is THCa?

THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is one of over a hundred naturally occurring cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant. THCa differs from other euphoric cannabinoids because it does not create any psychoactive effects when eaten raw. THCa must be heated, or decarboxylated using a lighter or other heat source. The human body is not hot enough to activate these effects. This is why smoking and vaping has become the preferred method of enjoyment. Once heated, THCa converts into Delta 9 and produces intoxicating effects. This happens because Delta 9 bonds with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system. This begins by submerging the flower in a solvent, such as ethanol, butane, or CO2. This mixture is heated until a crude extract is produced. This extract is then purged of residual solvents by applying heat in a vacuum, solidifying it. Finally, the concentrate is melted back into an oil where it is whipped to remove any remaining solvent and create air pockets.

What is the Difference Between Budder, Shatter, and Diamonds?

Budder, wax, shatter, and diamonds are all cannabis concentrates that are enjoyed for their aromatic terpene profile. However, they differ in how they are crafted, their appearance, and their potency.

Budder: This concentrate, also known as ‘wax,’ can reach a THCa potency of 54% – 90%. It uses a solvent-based extraction method and yields a creamy, sandy to amber-colored melted wax-like substance.

Shatter: Translucent amber in color, this concentrate can reach a potency of 90% THCa. It chips or breaks very easily when handled. Shatter uses a solvent-based extract.

Diamonds: Clear and vaguely resembling rough diamonds, this concentrate can reach a potency of 100% THCa. There are no aromatics unless terpenes are added after crafting the diamonds. This concentrate uses a closed-loop extraction or crystalline method and precise pressure.

How Do You Smoke Wax, Shatter, and Budder?

One of the most popular ways to smoke concentrates is to add the wax, shatter, or crumble to a bowl of flower. Many use the layering method to go about this. Start by putting down a thin layer of flower, then a layer of concentrate, then another layer of flower on top encapsulating it. This process starts by heating the bowl with a torch. After it is heated, add a tiny amount of concentrate into the bowl using a dab tool and place a cap on top. This battery-operated device can be set to a desired temperature and stays at that temperature for a few minutes. This allows the vapor to be inhaled at will before the device instantly shuts down.
