Description:
Root of Happiness Premium Ground Kava Root – Samoan is traditional kava, made the way it’s been made in the South Pacific for centuries: ground root, a strainer bag, a bowl of water, and some elbow grease. Longtime kava drinkers will recognize it right away. If you’re new and just curious what the fuss is about, this is the version to start with.
Kava sits in a different lane from everything else on our shelves. There are no cannabinoids and no hemp in it. It’s the ground root of the kava plant, which Pacific Islanders have been mixing up for communal gatherings and wind-down rituals for a very long time. Root of Happiness, a Sacramento-based kava company and American Kava Association affiliate, sources this one from Samoa and grinds it fine so it’s ready to prep straight out of the bag.
Here’s what you get: a half-pound bag holding 38 servings at one tablespoon (6 grams) each. Prepared the traditional way, that works out to roughly 4 to 6 quarts of kava. That’s plenty for a stretch of solo evenings or a full kava night with friends. Each serving comes in at 20 calories, with zero fat, zero sodium, and zero sugar. About as simple as a product gets.
Fair warning from people who’ve made a few bowls: you gulp this stuff. Mix it, pass it around, knock it back. That’s the whole point.
Benefits:
Ground root is where kava started, and plenty of regulars never move past it. There’s something about the hands-on prep that turns the whole thing into an occasion. The Samoan variety from Root of Happiness gives you a clean, consistent grind from a brand that takes its sourcing seriously. If you want a calm, settled evening with your phone in another room, this is a solid way to get there.

What is kava?
Kava is a plant native to the islands of the South Pacific, and “kava” is also the name of the drink made from its ground root. In places like Samoa, Fiji, and Vanuatu, it’s been part of ceremonies and everyday social life for generations. The root contains naturally occurring compounds called kavalactones, which give the drink its relaxing, mellow character. It isn’t cannabis or hemp, and it won’t produce the kind of euphoria you’d get from a THC product. Kava is its own thing entirely.
What’s the difference between ground kava root and instant kava?
Ground kava root is the traditional format. You put the ground root in a strainer bag, knead it in water for a few minutes, and drink what comes out. Instant kava and water-soluble extracts skip the kneading, so you just stir them into water. Ground root takes more effort, but a lot of kava drinkers prefer it for the ritual and the full-bodied result. If you’ve got ten minutes and a bowl, ground root is how kava was meant to be made.
What does kava taste like?
Honestly? Earthy. Think peppery, a bit bitter, with a muddy-water color that’s part of the charm. Most traditional kava drinkers will tell you not to overthink it. You gulp it rather than savor it, and a lot of people chase it with a piece of fruit or something sweet. It grows on you, and the social side of a kava bowl makes the taste a footnote pretty quickly.
Is CannaBuddy legit?
Yes. We’re a Charlotte-area shop with brick-and-mortar locations in Charlotte and Matthews, North Carolina, and we ship across most of the country. Every product we carry is third-party tested, and we post the Certificates of Analysis right on the product page, this kava included. We only stock brands we’d stand behind, which is why Root of Happiness earned a spot on our shelves. If kava is on your radar, browse the full shop and see what else pairs with a slow evening.
Suggested Use:
- Measure 6 grams (about 1 tablespoon) of ground kava per ½ cup of water into a strainer bag.
- Place the strainer bag in a bowl of water and knead it for about 3 minutes, squeezing the root so the water takes on that cloudy, earthy color.
- Remove the bag, pour the kava into a cup (a coconut shell if you’re feeling authentic), and gulp it down. Sipping defeats the purpose.
- Start with one serving and give it time before deciding whether you want a second. Start low, go slow.
- Pair it with a chill setting: good company, soft music, nothing on the calendar for a couple of hours.
- Store the bag sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Do not drive or operate machinery after use.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
